Why a Supplement fits the way people here get care

St. Mary's County is a peninsula with water on most sides. A trip to a hospital or a specialist can mean a real drive, and plenty of residents use providers in different parts of Maryland or beyond. A standard Supplement has no provider network, so it follows Original Medicare to any doctor or hospital that accepts Medicare. People who split time between homes, or who see specialists out of the county, often value that.

That is not true of every product. Medicare SELECT policies may ask you to use certain providers, and Medicare Advantage plans have networks that change each year. We compare these ideas with you, one question at a time.

How Medicare helps: Part B generally covers medically necessary urgent care. After the yearly Part B deductible ($283 in 2026), you usually owe 20% of the Medicare-approved amount, and a Supplement can pay some or all of that. Urgent care can cost less than an emergency room visit for problems that are not emergencies. For anything life-threatening, call 911.

Doctors and specialists

Primary care and specialist offices are too numerous and change too often for us to list fairly, and we do not rank or endorse providers. Instead, we suggest two checks. First, ask the office whether it accepts assignment for Medicare patients. Second, use Medicare's Care Compare tool to look up doctors and hospitals and see their published quality information.

Whichever facility you use, remember our standing note: Network participation varies by plan. Call us to check whether a facility is in yours.

Common questions

Will my Supplement pay for MedStar St. Mary's Hospital?

A standard Supplement has no provider network and works with any hospital that accepts Medicare. Plans sold as Medicare SELECT are an exception. Network participation varies by plan. Call us to check whether a facility is in yours.

Does Medicare cover urgent care visits?

Part B generally covers medically necessary urgent care. A Supplement can pay part of what Part B leaves, depending on the plan. Under Plan N, an emergency room visit that does not lead to admission can carry a copay of up to $50.

How do I know if my doctor accepts Medicare?

Ask whether they accept assignment, which means they take Medicare's approved amount as full payment. You can also search for providers on Medicare's Care Compare tool.
